The 2024 Gender Gap

September 05, 2024

Though Kamala Harris did not see a dramatic bump up after the Democrat National Convention, she has widened the gender gap, according to the latest ABC News/Ispos poll.

By The Numbers:

  • Overall, Harris leads Donald Trump 52% to 46% with likely voters, nominally unchanged from numbers before (49% Harris; 45% Trump).

  • Among women, however, Harris has increased her lead. Before the convention, Harris’s lead with women was 50%-45% (+5). Today, she leads Trump with women 54%-41% (+13).

  • Trump improved his standing with men. Before the DNC, Trump lagged Harris by three points, 49%-46%. Today, Trump leads Harris by five points with men, 51%-46%.

The Bottom Line: The gender gap appears to be irreversible for this election, and potentially the next. Trump’s path to victory will be increasing margins with male voters, specifically white college educated men. That said, for down-ballot Republicans in swing states should work at closing the gender gap in their own contests. It will make the difference especially in Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Arizona.
