The Democrat Party holds an advantage on several key issues that matter the most to Americans, according to a new Gallup poll. But even though Americans prefer that Democrats handle more key issues today, it has not improved the Democrat Party’s image overall.

By The Numbers:
Thirty-percent of Americans said “the government/poor leadership” is the most important problem facing the country today; 13% said it is the “high cost of living/inflation;” 11% said it is the “economy in general;” 10% said it is immigration; 7% said the “War in the Middle East;” 4% said fuel/oil prices; 4% said “moral/ethical/family decline;” and 4% said “race relations.”
When asked which party would do a better job handling the issue or problem they consider to be the most important facing the country, 44% of Americans choose the Democrat Party and 33% said the Republican Party. Twenty-three said there is no difference. This is an 11-point improvement for Democrats. The Republican Party led on this issue by 11 points in 2022, eight points in 2023, and five points in 2024.
The Bottom Line: Democrats would be ill-advised to celebrate polls like these too early. Their improved image is more of an indictment on the Republican lack of message, rather than an endorsement of the Democrat Party’s positions. In the closing weeks of this midterm, Republican candidates would be wise to highlight that Democratic candidates offer no real solutions. Should Democrats win majorities in one or both Houses in just nineteen days, it will not be a mandate but the rejection of the status quo. Democrats will face a challenge on what it is they will do with their new power.
