Inflation’s Hardest Hits

August 08, 2024

Survey after survey shows that inflation and cost of living are the top concerns of voters as they look to November. President Joe Biden wasted months trying to convince voters that Bidenomics was working, but he and the Democratic Party ignored the real pain Americans were suffering. According to a study from the Pew Research Center, the rising cost of items like margarine, juice, car repairs and insurance, and eggs are hitting Americans the hardest.

By The Numbers:

  • The food items that have had the largest increase over the last four years are margarine (56.8%), fats and oils like peanut butter (48.8%), crackers and other bread products (46.1%), beef roasts (44.2%), eggs (40.1%), sugar and sugar substitutes (39.5%), and uncooked beef and veal (39.2%)

  • The non-food items that have seen the highest increase in the last four years are car repairs (47.5%) and car insurance (47.3%).

  • Things like health insurance saw a decrease in costs over the last four years (-16.7%), as well as non-essential goods like smartphones (-53.9%), and video equipment (-14.1%).

The Bottom Line: Though the presidential race has shifted dramatically in the last month, what has remained the same is that Americans are struggling the rising cost of living at the grocery store and gas pumps. Inflation has made it tough for most Americans to say their lives were better four years ago. The Trump campaign and Republicans around the country must focus on the economy and put the higher cost of eggs, butter, and beef at Kamala Harris’s feet. Inflation is one of the major issues that blunt any momentum the Democratic ticket may see over the next few weeks as they celebrate their new life after President’s withdrawal.
