Presidential Candidates’ Swing State Travel

May 02, 2024

With 186 days until Election Day, one of the most important resources a candidate has is time. How have both major presidential candidates divided their time between the states that will likely decide the election? According to a total event count from January through April compiled by Axios, Biden has made the most stops in these critical states.

By The Numbers:

  • Since January, Biden has made eight stops in Pennsylvania; three in Wisconsin; two each in Michigan, Nevada and North Carolina; and one each in Georgia and Arizona.

  • Trump has made three stops in Pennsylvania; two stops each in Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Georgia; and one stop in Wisconsin. He has not yet to visit Arizona.

The Bottom Line: Even though Biden has the advantage in stops made and money raised, Trump leads in the latest round of polling. In the latest Emerson College poll, Trump leads Biden by five points in North Carolina, four in Arizona, three in Georgia and Wisconsin, two points in Pennsylvania, and one point in Michigan, and Nevada. All but North Carolina and Arizona are within the margin of error. Neither candidate has a clear advantage moving forward–Biden is lackluster at best on the trail and Trump is kept from doing events four days a week when he must sit in a courtroom. Still, voters expect candidates to show up. Biden’s 2020 basement strategy will not be enough this time around, and media from press gaggles as he goes into and comes out of court will not be enough for Trump either.
