Trump’s Approval on the Economy Slips

April 23, 2026

While President Donald Trump’s overall approval rating continues declining, his approval on handling the economy, inflation, and cost of living have also dipped, according to a recent NBC News poll.

By The Numbers:

  • Today 52% of Americans strongly disapprove of how Trump is handling inflation and cost of living, up eight points from a year ago. Only 13% strongly approve. Last year at this time that number was 20%.

  • More Americans said their personal financial situation is worse today than it was a year ago (40%), including 55% of Democrats and 46% of Independents

  • Fewer Americans said their economic situation is better (19%) than in any previous NBC poll during Trump’s second term.

The Bottom Line: Gas prices are a big factor as Americans evaluate Trump’s handling of the cost of living, per the NBC News poll. His larger problem is that any message of economic wins and gains is drowned out by distractions. Republicans must focus on persuading voters that the GOP has kept its promises and is the best party to continue delivering results.
