Economy Drives Trump Over Biden

March 07, 2024

More voters rate former President Donald Trump’s presidency higher than President Joe Biden’s presidency says a new CBS News/YouGov poll. Trump’s advantage is largely driven by voters’ recall of the economy under him compared to the economy today.

By The Numbers:

  • Forty-six percent of voters remember Trump’s presidency as “excellent/good,” compared to just 33% who say the same about Biden’s term so far. Fifty-three percent say Trump’s presidency was “fair/poor,” compared to 67% who say the same about Biden’s term.

  • Sixty-five percent of voters believe the economy was “good” under Trump, a 27-point advantage over the 38% who say the same about the economy under Biden. Only 28% of voters thought the economy as “bad” under Trump, compared to 59% who believe the economy is “bad” today.

The Bottom Line: Voter disgruntlement with today’s economy not only elevates Trump over Biden, but it helped propel him to victory in the Republican presidential primary as well. Exit polls from Super Tuesday, for example, of voters who said the economy was their deciding issue, 68% in in Virginia and 70% in North Carolina voted for Trump. As it’s gotten harder to make ends meet the past few years, voters have forgiven Trump for other actions or shortcomings in the hope that with him back in office, the cost of living and the economy can return to how they were four years ago.
