Satisfaction with Country Record Low

February 06, 2025

As President Donald Trump begins his second term, Americans have historically low satisfaction with the U.S. conditions, according to the latest Gallup data. The national mood is worse today than it was at the start of Trump’s first term, which underscores the opportunity Trump has to grow his standing by delivering results.

By The Numbers:

  • On average, only 38% of Americans are satisfied with different aspects of U.S. society or policies. In the past, this number as over 40%, including a record high of 54% in 2002.

  • On average, Americans are less satisfied today (38%) than at the start of Trump’s first term in 2017 (44%). The differences are most drastic with quality of life (-18 today); the size and influence of major corporations (-14); the quality of public education (-13); the amount Americans pay in federal taxes (-13); the opportunity to get ahead by working hard (-13) and the state of the nation’s economy (-12).

The Bottom Line: Trump won in November because Americans’ view of the country’s situation had fallen so low.  The key is not just were Americans pessimistic about the country’s future. They’d also lost faith in the Biden Administration’s leadership and Democratic Party. Trump and Republicans have a historic opportunity to restore confidence by delivering wins that will not only light social media on fire, but also restart the economy and improve the lives of everyday Americans.
