Trump Support After One Month

February 23, 2017

Trump Support After One Month: Where does President Donald Trump’s support stand after one month in office?  A recent CBS News poll broke down his support into four groups: “Believers,” “Conditional Supporters,” “Curious,” and “Resisters.”  Per CBS, 22% of Americans are “Believers” who say they are “Trump supporters, period,” and 35% are the “Resisters,” those who say they are “against Trump, period.”  For these two groups, very little will change their minds.  The other half of U.S. adults can be swayed, however.  These are the “Conditional Supporters,” the 22% who say they will continue to support Mr. Trump only if he “delivers what they want,” and the “Curious,” the 21% who oppose the president now, “but could reconsider him if he does a good job.”

Looking at the demographic breakdowns, there are more “Believers” among Republicans (51%) and those who voted for Mr. Trump (51%), and more “Resisters” among Democrats (66%); Hispanics (40%); black Americans (63%); than those who voted for Hillary Clinton (71%); and 18-29 year olds (45%).  “Conditional Supporters” and “Curious” make up about half of white Americans (26% “Conditional Supporters” and 19% “Curious”); half of 30-44 year olds (21% and 26%, respectively); half of Independents (30% and 26%); and half those who voted for someone other than Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Trump (16% and 44%).

Mr. Trump can broaden his support in key groups like Independents and those who did not vote for him or Mrs. Clinton if he delivers.  He will diminish his standing and fail to win new backers if he neglects his promises or if his accomplishments are overshadowed by needless distractions.
