Congress Approval Lower Than Biden

December 26, 2024

Only four out of ten Americans approve of the job President Joe Biden is doing, according to Gallup tracking. These numbers are not as bad as how Americans view Congress, however. This is not particularly surprising as Congress waited again until the final hour to pass a spending bill to keep the government funded.

By The Numbers:

  • Biden’s approval stands at 39%, similar to his job approval ratings in November (37%) and October (41%). Gallup notes that Biden has not had an approval rating at 50% or higher since July 2021.

  • Only 17% of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing. Congress’s approval rating hovered around 20% for most of 2024, with lows of 12% in February and 13% in May.

  • While these are dire numbers for members of Congress, congressional job approval has been dismal over the last decade. Since 2010, congressional job approval has not been over 36%.

The Bottom Line: These numbers are not just fueled by a poor economic environment or typical Washington, D.C. gridlock. Only 19% of Americans are satisfied with the direction of the country. Frustrating episodes like last minute threats of government shutdowns do not help. When the new Congress is sworn in on January 3 and Donald Trump is sworn in January 20, they have an opportunity to be organized and intentional in the first 100 days. If they stay focused and deliver on what Americans elected them to do – break inflation, deliver economic growth, secure the border, rebuild the military, calm the world, and end the woke assault on America – they have a chance to buck this this anemic approval rating trend.
