Americans On Tax Reform

September 28, 2017

Americans On Tax Reform: What do the American people think of tax reform?  When asked in a recent CNN poll how they feel about the way the federal government taxes individuals and businesses, 68% say changes are needed (35% say “a complete overhaul” is necessary while 33% say “major changes” are necessary).  Twenty-four percent say “minor changes” are necessary; and 4% say “no changes” are necessary.

When selling tax reform, the White House and Senate Republicans must be clear about how reform will help every American.  Right now, many Americans believe only the wealthy and big businesses will see a decrease in taxes (42% and 47%, respectively).  Meanwhile, 34% believe their own personal taxes will go up and 41% believe the amount of taxes paid by the middle class will increase.  Clearly, explaining tax reform and rallying public support behind reform will be essential to gaining public support.
