A new CNN poll this week found Americans believe President Donald Trump owns the economy and aren’t happy about it. These latest numbers show after more than a year in office, voters now believe Trump’s policies are affecting their economic situation, for good or bad.

By The Numbers:
Seventy-seven percent of Americans, including a majority of Republicans, said that Trump’s policies “have increased the cost of living in their own community.” This puts Trump’s approval on the economy at a new low of 30%.
Seventy-five percent said the war with Iran has had a negative effect on their financial situation; 65% said tariffs had a negative effect; 46% said AI technology had a negative effect; 41% said new tax laws had a negative effect; and 35% said stock market performance had a negative effect.
Right now, Democrats have an advantage over Republicans on health care costs (43-24%), helping the Middle Class (40-27%), income inequality (39-22%), cost of living (37-28%), the economy (35-33%), and inflation (33-28%). Republicans have an advantage on taxes (35-32%) and the stock market (38-21%).
The Bottom Line: There have been multiple reports of a White House pivot to “affordability” over the last few months, but the public isn’t buying it yet. As POTUS mulls suspension of the Federal gas tax and other actions, the clock is ticking to show how Republicans have done a better job on cost of living heading into November.
