The Realities of the Affordability Crisis

December 18, 2025

The word of the year is “affordability,” but hammering the term does nothing unless it is paired with acknowledgement of the human costs. A recent POLITICO poll, conducted by Public First, took a deep dive on the electorate’s mood amid financial strain and found who they blame and what exact concerns they have when it comes to “affordability.”

By The Numbers:

  • “Affordability” is a “top concern” for 56% of Americans. One in five voters who supported President Donald Trump in 2024 believe the economy is the president’s responsibility, while 37% blame former President Joe Biden. Fifty-three percent of Kamala Harris voters say Trump holds full responsibility, while only 6% blame Biden.

  • The most important information in the poll was what specific cost of living concerns Americans have. Almost half (45%) say groceries are “the most challenging” cost they face; 38% say housing; 34% say health care; and 31% say utility bills.

The Bottom Line: These numbers show that cost of living is top of mind for voters going into the 2026 Midterm Elections. Most Americans expect Trump and Republicans to address the issue now and there are several factors that impact Americans’ pocketbooks, top among them being health care. The campaigns that specifically acknowledge and address the kitchen table concerns will have the best chance of connecting with voters come next November.
