Fundamentals Foreshadowed Trump Victory

November 14, 2024

While the presidential race appeared close, Gallup notes the fundamentals always pointed to victory for Donald Trump. The economy weighed the most on people’s minds, Republicans had the edge in voter identification, and those dissatisied with the country’s direction were much more numerous that those who were satisfied. More importantly, voters viewed Republicans as more able to do a better job than the Democrats on the most important problems.

By The Numbers:

  • In years Republicans won the White House, they led on the top issues, which ranged from war/peace to economy and immigration (1952, 1956, 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984, 1988, 2000, 2004, 2016, 2024).

  • In years Democrats won the presidency, they led on the top issues, which ranged from international issues to the economy, to COVID-19 (1948, 1960, 1964, 1976, 1992, 2008, 2012, 2020).

The Bottom Line: Even though polls showed a tightening race across the board, these fundamentals always favored Trump and Republicans. Now Republicans must deliver – and quickly – to maintain this advantage in the next round of elections in 2026.
