Trump Job Approval Down In Every State

October 12, 2017

According to recent polling from Morning Consult, President Donald Trump’s job approval rating has dropped seven points since Jan., moving from 49% (27% strongly approve/22% somewhat approve) at the time of his inaugural to 43% (20% strongly approve/23% somewhat approve) today.  During the same period, his job disapproval rating has climbed thirteen points, increasing from 39% (28% strongly disapprove/11% somewhat disapprove) in Jan. to 52% (39% strongly disapprove/13% somewhat disapprove) today.

How does the president fair state by state?  According to Morning Consult, the president’s job approval is down in every state, his net approval dropping as much as 30 points in solidly blue states like New York, to eleven points in red states like Louisiana.

What does this mean for Trump states that have an incumbent Democratic Senator up for reelection next year?  Mr. Trump’s approval rating has tended to drop less in those states, including West Virginia (-2.4), Missouri (-4.2 points), Pennsylvania (-4.4), North Dakota (-4.9), Ohio (-4.9), Indiana (-5.5), Wisconsin (-5.8), Montana (6.7), Florida (-7.9), and Michigan (-8).  Out of these states, North Dakota and West Virginia are the only one where the president’s September job approval was 50% or higher.

Mr. Trump can recoup his positive ratings in these key states and the nation as whole by working with Congress to deliver on major campaign promises this year and in early 2018.  Doing so will not only help his agenda, it will also aid Republicans running for office next year.
